Well, I knew it would happen eventually. One of the new orchids I brought home has what I’m pretty certain are the dreaded thrips. I have done some research, but wondered if anyone had any practical, hands on experience with what actually worked for them. Thank you in advance!
Systemic granules, hands down! When I had them, I put my whole daycare on a regimen where I sprayed all of them with Captain Jacks Dead bug once a week for a month and treated everyone with systemic granules. They were probably gone week 3, but the infestation was so bad on a few of my babies and I reuse my water, so I erred on the side of caution. I’d look up the life cycle of thrips to get a better understanding of how you wanna treat…
1 LikeDo you remember what brand or where you obtained the granules? I’m in the U.S., and the ones I’ve seen recommended, sticks and granules, don’t seem to be available to me.

I would also be interested in the brand. Orchids tend to be sensitive to chemicals so I’ve always been reluctant to use mouth more than insecticidal soap and alcohol.

1 LikeSeconding the granules- I also used a bit of diomataceous earth in the crown and crevasses to make sure nothing was lurking in there, it doesn’t hurt the plant

0 LikesI have found repeated and persistent use of alcohol was the best way to get rid of mealies. But it’s essential that you repot, then continue to treat for at least 2 weeks. I did it daily.

Diatomaceous earth is great because thrips drop down into the soil for part of their life. That would eliminate them and allow you to eventually get rid of everything without them coming back with a vengeance.
