hey hey i don’t know too much about plants I’m definitely still learning and I’m having trouble determining whats bad and normal for orchids. The first photo is about the white roots, is that normal or is it similar to mold? i checked the roots that are under the soil and they look okay except for that one that it sort of translucent in the other photo. Secondly there is a piece out of my leaf i don’t know how it got there it kind of just appeared. The picture with the flowers is showing that it still seems healthy in terms of up there and theres even a new plant growing from the root. If anyone could hive me a few pointers or let me know if somethings up that’d be sooo helpful! Thank you!

    The roots should turn silver at some point, that’s really normal and is the indicator for when it needs watering. When they look green, they’re hydrated and will dry out to silver in a week or so. You have new growth on the roots, so that’s good. Make sure the media and the roots dry out completely before watering. You have them in bark, which is great. Your decorative pot is ceramic, and if the inside is unglazed, it may hold on to moisture a bit longer so you should be sure that’s dried out too before watering. I recommend immersing the clear pot in lukewarm water for a couple of minutes when it’s time to water, then let it drain for a few minutes before putting it back in the ceramic pot. Between the leaf and the red new growth on the roots, I think it’s getting too much direct sun. These orchids grow on trees in the forest, so they thrive in bright indirect light but can handle maybe 2 hours of direct sun (morning or evening sun). They’re used to bright sun filtered by tree canopies, like what you’d experience on a hiking trail in the woods: it’s super bright but the sun isn’t beating down on you. You can try adding a sheer curtain or moving it to a window that’s part shade.

      thank you so so much for all the info!! that is extremely helpful! ill make sure to move them somewhere else in my room after a little bit of direct sunlight..? thank you for the watering tip aswell, i had bought it with that type of soil in it and i have tried to be super cautious about watering and i fear sometimes i still do too much and it ends up sitting the the pot days after.. 😓 BUT THANK YOU SO MUCH!

    I’d second everything Laura mentioned about the roots and watering above. What you are holding in the second photo looks like a new flower spike. It should be coming from the stem of the orchid- probably between the leaves on the side of the plant. When the blooms drop on the first spike, you can cut it down to the base. It will allow the orchid to put all its energy into the new flowers.

      thank you for the info!! so when the flowers that are currently there fall off i should cut the biggest plant so that it can focus on growing the smaller plant? what should i do if it grows more flowers above the ones that are there on the same stem? should i let it do its thing or cut it off anywayss?

      By plant, I think you mean the stem? Theyre also called flower spikes. Basically the thing the flowers are growing from and the thing you’re holding in that one picture serve the same purpose, that’s where the flowers grow from. But yes, once the flowers that are currently there die, you should cut off the stem theyre growing from. If more flowers grow from the same stem, then you can wait until those ones die too.

      Some people like to allow for more flowers on an already bloomed spike. Some people prefer to cut it all the way down to the base. I prefer to cut it completely so that you get a stronger growth, and more flowers on the next spike.

    You don’t want to let the roots stay wet for a long time either! Orchid roots need a lot of oxygen and hate staying wet. I would move it to something that drains extremely well so that the roots can breathe and dry efficiently :D
