My mom was complaining about having fungal gnats in the kitchen. She has several orchids there so this morning I checked them out. It was pretty bad. At least three of them were sitting in a pool of water and had such bad root rot that I had to throw them away. I tried to save the other four by cleaning off the roots, cutting off any black roots that looked rotten and then repotting. I didn’t have any orchid mix and honestly since roots are in pretty bad condition already I didn’t feel like going out and getting an orchid mix for potting them. Instead I used a chunky mix I already have. Do orchids need to just be in bark? If so I’ll go get some this week and transfer them to it. Do you think they can be OK in a chunky potting mix?

I keep mine in straight orchid back with a pot with tons of holes for lots of air. Mine do very well with that combination

Yes and the pot needs to be seen through roots need to see sunlight. Keep in a saucer water the saucer and only when the roots turn silver. Also for Fungus gnats dissolve mosquito bits in the standing water to kill larvae

Any kind of fine soil is going to be too suffocating for these phals’ epiphytic roots. They need air pockets- or you’ll run the risk of rotting the rest of the roots they have left. Since your mom tends to be an over-waterer, I’d stick to just bark, not even a bark/sphagnum moss mix. She should only be watering when the roots have gone from bright green to silver. They should NOT be wet all the time. If possible- getting clear plastic ventilated interior pots to promote air flow and to see when the roots tell you it’s time to water would be ideal.
