So this might be just a warning post for others not to be as stupid as me. I’ve been wondering for so long why I had one orchid doing better than the other. This one should’ve died by now and somehow pushed through. Is it normal for orchids to come in soil and not in orchid bark? I couldn’t tell due to there being some moss and a light coating of bark mixed in on top but CLEARLY the Orchid cannot grow and flow properly in thick soil… Its a no brainer for me, I’m upset I didn’t check before. I’m going to soak this baby to try to get the soil off? Unless someone suggests something else sooner… Ugh the new bulbs do look promising so I hope it’s not the end. It’s been over a year, I assumed it didn’t flower due to poor watering (I just switched to filtered, our tap was hurting the plants). Fingers CROSSED.

This looks typical of most orchids where they have layers of peat moss - I’ve seen up to 4 even a ‘cage/basket’ around the crown. You did well soaking all the peat off. Sometimes I’d leave just the roots in Luke warm tea water they like it acidic (keep the crown out of the water or it can rot). This softens up all the stuck on fibers. Then carefully I use tweezers to pick it off then repot in an orchid medium. Miss orchid has some great videos and tips!

I would second Miss Orchid Girl on you tube. She has a wealth of information, on all kinds of orchids, from years and years and years of experience. Definitely check her out. In the meantime, you’re going to have to get rid of a lot of the dead vegetation on the bottom of that plant. I’m going to put a picture of where I would cut. If everything below that line is mushy and/or dying- it’ll just spoil the new bark and sphagnum media that you plant it in. even if you’re cutting into old stem, this is what I would do. If you can seal off that wound, either with hot glue or wax, it shouldn’t pose a problem to your freshly repotted orchid.

It looks like you already have new roots growing, which is fantastic. I would just keep an eye on the moisture levels you are providing. Keep it hydrated, but letting it air out in between waterings.
