I’m reposting this to this group in hope to find some help. This root feels line it’s rotting on my moth orchid. It is a new root that quickly grew starting about 2 months ago. It was not firm so I tried watering it because it needed water anyways. Please help and I’ll try to reply to anyone needing more info quickly. Thanks so much!

It sounds like the pot doesn’t have any holes for air, orchids typically like airy soil so you may need one like the image I posted. You could have also overwatered, I use the roots to check, if they look silvery white then I soak the plant for 15-30 minutes. Hope this helps!!

I have a question for you. Are your orchids leaves soft and bendable or firm and sturdy?

They are now firm and sturdy, a new one is coming in too, but at the time of the picture they were soft. Just wanted to show the holes in the pot and this was the best picture I had.

Ok! I just wanted to make sure your orchid was healthy! My cat has been knocking off my orchid and its leaves are really soft. I’m going to be mounting it on a piece of driftwood and have it hung from the ceiling so he can’t knock it off. lol

Lol, I have a dog so thankfully he is uninterested in any and all plants. 😆 🥲

Do you spray the medium or just pour water? If you pour water how much do you typically pour?

Aside from that roots, your plant looks to be in good shape. Based on the information provided, I’m thinking the roots are not getting sufficient air flow. The way I would proceed is to repot into orchid bark. You run the risk of the flowers dropping, but it seems like you need to see what is happening with the roots. If you opt to leave it in the terracotta, I would used 100% bark. If you move it to a ventilated pot, you might consider mixing in some sphagnum, up to 50%. I would trim away any roots that are mushy, papery, brown or black.
