I spotted some dendrobiums at Lowe’s this afternoon and was curious if there was a major difference between their care and phals. I didn’t purchase one but wanted to learn more before bringing another plant home lol. Most of my collection is phals but I have one lady slipper and one cattleya, which are both doing well. Also, I was shocked to see the wide variety of orchids at Lowe’s: they even had some loose cattleyas and other varieties that I haven’t seen outside of an orchid show.

Phalaenopsis orchids, commonly known as moth orchids, thrive in warm, humid conditions with bright, indirect light and regular watering. They are known for their ease of care and long-lasting blooms. Dendrobiums, on the other hand, prefer cooler temperatures, less humidity, and a more variable watering schedule, with a resting period in winter. Many Dendrobium species require a period of dryness during the winter months. Here's a more detailed comparison: Light: Phalaenopsis: Prefers bright, indirect light. They can tolerate some direct morning sun, but avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch their leaves. Dendrobium: Generally needs more light than Phalaenopsis, with some species even tolerating full sun. Some Dendrobiums, like the Dendrobium nobile, need bright light, especially during winter to help ripen their stems. Temperature: Phalaenopsis: Thrives in warm temperatures, ideally between 70-85°F (21-29°C) during the day and 60-70°F (16-21°C) at night. Dendrobium: Many Dendrobiums prefer cooler temperatures, especially during the winter rest period, with temperatures around 60°F (16°C) being optimal. Some species can tolerate warmer temperatures, especially during the growing season. Humidity: Phalaenopsis: Prefers high humidity, ideally around 50-70%. Dendrobium: Generally prefers lower humidity, with levels between 40-60% being ideal. Watering: Phalaenopsis: Water when the potting mix is mostly dry. They like to be kept fairly moist, but not soggy. Dendrobium: Water when the potting mix is almost dry. Some species require a period of dryness during the winter rest period. Potting Mix: Phalaenopsis: Use a well-draining potting mix that allows for proper root aeration. Dendrobium: Dendrobiums often prefer smaller pots and a more porous potting mix like red lava rock or smaller orchid bark. Resting Period: Phalaenopsis: Generally does not have a distinct resting period. Dendrobium: Many Dendrobiums require a period of rest during the winter months, with reduced watering and fertilization.
