I think my Phal has root rot? The lower leaves have fallen off and there is a visible blackness creeping up the stem system. I repotted it a couple of months ago. It had been cared for by someone who watered it every Friday and did not drain it but left it inside an outer, almost exact same size as inner “orchid” pot. In other words constant standing water. When repotting I removed the dead roots. This left 1 lower root about .5 inches in length and one reaching above ground. Poor thing had been struggling and my attempts to help it appear to have done the opposite. Ideas on what to do going forward? It’s already lost the two biggest leaves at the base. Thank you!

Unfortunately, it appears that the infection from the root rot moved up into stem of the plant. It’s almost impossible to stop the progress from this point. I have seen success once with cutting away of the infected portion of the stem, coating the cut area in cinnamon, and keeping the area very dry. If the rot hasn’t progressed too far, you’d just keep caring for the orchid, (being sure to let the roots dry between waterings) and hoping that new roots sprout soon. But it’s a long shot, and would only work if the infection hasn’t moved to far into the axis.

Thank you for replying! This is what I was fearing. There wouldn’t be much left if I cut away the infected portion of the stem. 🥺 It has been a trooper though!

Then just keep your fingers crossed and keep the area dry. If it progresses, you’ll know. Good luck!
