I noticed really small circular thin spots on my oncidium Sharry Baby leaves and some other areas on the leaf where it looks almost transparent. It looks like light could come through the thin spots on the leaf. That doesn’t seem right to me. Is this a pest or disease issue? Any treatment suggestions? The oncidium is healthy overall and has lots of roots and growing new pods. But the thin spots on the leaves are weird. What do you all think?
Huh. Is the damage pretty isolated to one older growth or a newer pseudobulb’s leaves? Or is it all over? Do you notice it on any of your other plants? Did it come on quickly or all at once? Does it seem to be getting worse at all? If it spreads or grows, it’s troubling. If it’s mechanical damage, just keep an eye out that it doesn’t get infected- do you have pets? Could it have been nibbled on? Lastly- It seems a little dehydrated- The pseudobulbs look plump, but the leaves are a little wrinkly. Whatever the issue is, the less stress the better, I’d increase the frequency of water for a bit.

It’s not the pets (they can’t reach the plants) and the damage is mostly on the older leaves but I did see two circular thin spots on the newer growth, which makes me worried it’s a pest or disease problem. Maybe I should wash and treat the plant for insects just in case? The bulbs are firm and fat, but the humidity is dropping quickly so I’ll adjust the watering schedule.
0 J'aimeOk, narrowing down the possibilities… wipe the underside of a leaf with a damp cotton disc (like my daughter uses to remove her makeup) or a white paper towel. Do you see rust colored dots, or a greenish sort of smudge?
0 J'aime No rust colored dots or green smudge. Months ago (when the plant was in bloom) there was one mealy bug and aphids on the flowers, which I killed with q-tip and alcohol. But I haven’t seen aphids or mealy bugs since then. Disease or microscopic pests?
0 J'aimeI don’t know but wondering…I have similar spots on my rubber tree plant and they say they are calcium cells and normal. Just a thought.
