Cut the stem back to the base.

As Plant Mom said, cut the spike off at the base and continued care as normal. It will put out a new one when its ready. Now is a good time to repot if it needs it.

I’d just like to say, if it’s from a general store, it totally needs repotted. The mix those come in is designed to last just long enough for you to have the flowers and then it degrades and kills the plant. Ask me how I know. 😭

Those bastards. It makes me furious that they set people up to fail. All of my friends who have tried orchids have been instantly discouraged and turned off.

What soil mix should I use instead?

Orchid specific, you can buy it at most places. Its usually made of a mix of orchid bark, charcoal, perlite. This allows for good drainage, and lots of air flow to the roots.
