I’ve had this orchid for two years now and it’s bloomed only twice but has grown a lot of leaves- what can I do to get a true bloom again and is growing these leaves typical ?

SaAssuming you are talking about the leaves on the stem, they are keikis; baby orchids that are genetically identical to the mother plant.

Is the mother plant still growing leaves from the crown? If so, then there’s no reason it won’t give you another spike. Once your keikis have grown roots of their own, you can separate them from the flower spike. I would then cut this old spike. Phalaenopsis will grow vegetatively (leaves and roots) when temps remain higher. You can get many hybrids to initiate a spike by dropping the nighttime temperature to the lower 60’s for a couple of weeks. That should trigger your orchid and give it the signal that it’s time to grow some flowers. The problem with some of these flower shop phals is that they have been hybridized and crossbred so much that some are just all mixed up genetically. Your particular plant may just be more prone to producing keikis. The steps I’ve outlined above might help you encourage a flower spike with blooms, they may not. You might have better luck with the baby plants, but as they are genetically the same as the other, they may come with the same problems.
