This is an update on my triple spiked rescue I got several weeks ago. I removed the spikes (though I hated doing it with the gorgeous flowers it had) and got rid of all of the mushy and rotted roots. It appears to have two very small new roots and the roots that weren’t removed are well hydrated and green but the leaves just aren’t looking any better. They are still paper thin and have no structure to them. Am I deluding myself that this little guy is able to be rescued? Will the leaves ever plump up and regain any kind of structure or do I just wait and hope new healthy leaves grow in and replace them? So far I have no hint of new foliage growth just two 1 cm roots with growth ends.

    You will see some improvement in the firmness and wrinkles in the leaves, but they won’t ever look perfect again. The new leaves that grow for you will look glossy and plump and lovely, but they may be smaller than these as your plant was set back a bit by dehydration. In time with good care, the new ones should get as big or bigger than the ones you have now. It’s normal that you may not have a new leaf growth in only a few weeks. In some hybrids you may only have 1-2 leaves per year. The roots you have look great. Especially if you have a couple new ones coming too. Super important to water regularly- I see that the roots are green and plump, but just as importantly- they need air as well. So they should NOT stay wet all the time, let them get to that (still firm and plump), silvery color, then water again. Otherwise you’ll just rot what you have left.

      All of my orchids are grown bare root specifically to avoid overwatering as I had a history of loving my plants too much. 😂

      Do you mind if I ask about the environment where you live? Is it really humid? I’ve really only seen Vandas grown bare rooted regularly, as phalaenopsis generally need a little more water retention in their media- even if it’s just chunky bark chips. Do your other phals bloom regularly for you? They don’t seem as dehydrated as the one in the initial post. That’s good. Maybe this hybrid just needs a bit more water regularly. 🤷🏻‍♀️

      I live just outside of Nashville so it is pretty humid. All of my orchids thrive with bare roots but I do mist the roots daily and I keep water in the leca to keep humidity levels high. This photo shows two of them that are both pushing new roots and new leaves just sitting on top of peat over the leca.

    It’s also funny you should mention Vandas as I have one and it is the reason I decided to try growing the phalaenopsis that way.
