HeatherIf it is cone shaped it is more than likely a root. If it is mitten shaped (round with a lopsided knob) it is probably a spike.

MeasomerPiMaybe, but it looks like the terminal end of a came to me. But that doesn’t mean a spike won’t develop from there at some point in the future. Give it a week or two and you’ll know for sure. If it does bloom, post pics so we can see 🤞 How much light is it getting? Demdrobiums are light hungry (bright but not direct), and blooming reluctance is typically light related in my experience. I keep mine with my cattleyas under growlights that are on for 12 hours a day. It’s probably similar light level to mid morning in an east window (as a point of reference, I’m in Texas). The light is intense enough to cause freckling in the cats and mild reddening in some of the dens’ leaves. My dendrobiums have bloomed consistently under these conditions. Two have not rested for a couple of years 🙀 Hope this helps.

MattLFor a minute, I read “cause freckling in the cats” and I thought “gosh my cat isn’t that light sensitive but she doesn’t nap under the grow lights, that doesn’t sound healthy” and then I realized what you meant 😅

Okay, thank you for the help! I will make sure to put it near one of the grow lights to allow it to get enough light. Fingers crossed

Should 5 hours of light in the morning (east windows, dawn to around 11) plus 6 hours of a grow light enough (it’s not very strong)?

That might work. Give it a try and if it doesn’t yield good results, up the light.
