Hi I have just ordered a new orchid. Does an orchid need to be in a window. My house is south facing so there’s a lot of light in the room but I was hoping to put her on my desk

    What type of orchid did you order? Different types have different light needs. Most phalaenopsis have been hybridized excessively to retain easy to grow easy to bloom characteristics of their parents chosen specifically for these traits. These orchids, also known as moth orchids, can be grown with less light than most, including desk lamps or household lighting.

      It’s a moth orchid. The whole room is very bright as we have a large window but it’s got a very small windowsill so I’m not sure it will fit

      Phalaenopsis like bright indirect light- direct sun can burn their leaves. So if it’s bright enough, it’s very possible you’ll be fine. See how it does in that spot. If it seems to thrive, you’re good- if it struggles, you may want to increase the light.

      If you notice it struggling a little, you can get a small grow light that clips on the side of the pot relatively cheap on Amazon. I use a Sansi full spectrum 5w and it works great for smaller plants that I have scattered around 🙂

      To add a little to Jen’s recommendation - a good indicator of light is leaf color. Most sources say orchid leaves will turn a light grass green when given sufficient light to bloom. I don’t find that to be the case with my phals except for the few species in my collection. Most of mine are a lovely green, not too light or too dark. However, phals will develop a red tinge when sun stressed. If you see that, you know the plant is getting as much light it can safely handle.
