Show me the Greens!

I am nervous. I’ve never had an orchid. But husband came home with this beauty. I thought the ice cube thing was a myth. Any tips on keeping a healthy orchid? Do I really toss an 🧊 in there twice a week?

    No ice cubes!!! I put mine in a bowl of water for 30mins when the roots are silvery and then let the excess drain off and pop them back in the decorative pot.

    Orchids are unique in that their roots turn white when they need water, and green when they’re saturated enough and don’t need water. Therefore, it is also common practice to keep them in Leca with a clear pot. You can do it if you would like and if it would be easier for you, but you surely don’t have to☺️

    Hey folks, Nice to see all the information and helping community here. I literally never had plant in my life but just started with little fern a few days back and I came to know beauty and science behind having a plant. Wanted to check on orchid, how often does it bloom and can I have it in my condo considering medium to low sunlight and Toronto weather ?

      If it is your standard grocery store phalaenopsis, they are an incredibly hardy bunch of plants. Hybridized excessively for the best possible home growing conditions. They like ‘bright shade’ or really almost any indirect sun. East or west facing windows are great, but honestly, I have had success with these under regular table lamps. They bloom once a year with optimum care, but these in particular have been known to stay in bloom for MONTHS. Keep in mind every plant/environment is different, and you will learn as you go. I find the info in this group is really helpful. We also just like looking at each other’s pretty orchids- so if you buy one, show it off! 😍

      I had mine in a basement window over in Christie Pits and was able to get it to rebloom so def in a condo you’ll be able to care for it really well!! My orchid was perfectly happy in that window even with that epic city-shut-down snow storm we had a few years back where the window was buried for weeks!
