Well what do I do now? My Fredclarkeara woke up a couple of months ago. I waited (im)patiently for it to produce enough growth to begin watering again. It rejoices in the glorious bounty of liquid bestowed by moi by putting on a good amount of growth. Hurrah! We are getting along great. And now I see a tiny new pseudobulb peeking out of the media. Right after I watered it. Darn it. What should I do? Continue watering? Or stop until the new one matures enough?? Will it rot??? Am I worrying needlessly?!? <deep breath> But seriously, anyone with Catasetum experience please let me know what you think. I’ve only had this guy for a couple of years so it’s still an adventure. Ugh, what a beautifully frustrating plant.

    Woof. Catasetums. Who can tell what they are gonna do, right? My experience is small and also frustrating with this type. What I might do here… 😬 is carefully pull some of the sphagnum away from the new growth, just to give it a little breathing room. Then try to focus my watering just a bit more on the other side. I know it won’t prevent it from moisture completely, but it may give the little guy some time to grow and toughen up a bit. Do you have this guy outside? A little breeze always helps when you’re trying to prevent moisture induced issues. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed!

      Hi Jen! What I good idea. Strategic watering hadn’t even crossed my mind. It’s outside. Seems to do better out there in the heat. But of course, this weekend will be mild and rainy. Oh well, let go and let orchids. Right? It hasn’t bloomed yet. Is a Fredclarkeara After Dark 'SVO Black Pearl' so should have lovely ‘black’ flowers. The photo isn’t mine. I am still feeling my way through the care for this one. So far I haven’t rotted it so calling that a win. This season I was hoping to focus on blooming, but looks like it’s decided my time will be better served by stressing out over random new growth.

      Good grief, that’s stunning. Worth the worry and fretting if you can get that puppy to bloom.

      Right? Totally worth it. I may be 90 before I figure it out but I’ll be a happy 90 😁
