Out of curiosity is there a reason as to why so many orchid growers use brown/tan sphagnum moss instead of the green? Apologies if this is a stupid question đ

Not a ton of experience here, but I learned from a workshop that it is actually the same thing except the green moss has been painted green to be more aesthetically pleasing. The moss is all dead and brown to start. Eventually the green paint will come off with regular watering. Personally, Iâd rather keep paint off of a plant as much as possible because it could interfere with photosynthesis and possibly cause other issues. But really, itâs up to you!

0 LikesSide note- even the brown moss can turn green with algae in moist and sunny conditions, but itâs not great for the roots as it can burn them if it leans toward too much Cyanobacteria. So I stick toward the natural brown moss just to make sure I can spot algae developing.
