Hi Orchid Lovers. Any tips on how to nourish the new spike? A leaf is resting on it.

    What do you mean how to nourish the new spike? As long as the orchid is getting adequate light, you are watering and fertilizing regularly, it will be nourished along with the rest of the plant. As far as the leaf resting on it- that’s not a problem. All flower spikes emerge from between the leaves on the side of the main axis of a phalaenopsis. You can train it to grow up straight into a cascading look, or let it grow out and sort of dangle naturally pendant.

    Thanks, yes that makes sense! My first orchid so I wasn’t sure. I’ll look into those 2 options to see which I prefer

      Well, you’ve already started training it upright, into the flower shop-like ‘cascade.’ So see how that works for you, and then next time you can allow the spike to do its own thing and see how you like the natural look. Be aware that a spike and flower buds will grow in the direction of the greatest light source, so if you change the plant’s position or move it around while it’s growing, the spike will change growth directions as well and you can end up with a bit of a swirly zig zag. 😆

    Haha okay I’ll be careful about light placement. And hopefully a new spike to test out the other method
