Can anyone tell me if this is very bad as in disease or simply a case of overwatering or too much light. It’s on a new cane. The roots seem healthy and the new cane seems very healthy but for that discoloration.

Hard to say without knowing how the discoloration appeared or progressed, so I would guess based on the fact that it is the top of the new growth that some water got in there and caused bacterial infection that is now rotting the new growth. If it is just the exterior sheaths that is discolored, and not the slightly pointy growing tip, I would remove that sheath and see if there’s any discoloration on the rust of the new pseudobulb. if it continues to spread onto the new growth or progress down toward the ryzome, where it connects to the rest of the plant, you should cut your losses and lop it off to protect the rest of the plant. You will be losing one season of growth, but there are probably plenty of active “eyes” and they should create a fresh new growth for you.
