I didn't want to take on an orchid because I never had luck with them in the past as in decades ago, but my son got me one for my birthday and it's gorgeous I'm just afraid of killing it, it's planted in Moss and he told me that they suggested that he pour water in it for 20 minutes and then dump the water out once every two weeks or some crap IDK also any idea what kind it is 🤷‍♀️ 💕🤷‍♀️ I have it in the sunroom where the humidity is in the 70s and the temps are typically somewhere between67° to 75° depending on the weather outside . I have it in a south facing window with a sheer curtain

    Your light is good- south facing could be too much direct sun for these guys but with a sheer curtain you should be fine. Your plant should be potted in an interior clear plastic pot that slips in and out of the decorative pot. If so, you should be able to pull it out and see the orchid roots. If they are green, do not water. If they are silver, it’s time to water. For your plant, it could be every 10 days, every 5 days, or every other day if you lived in a dry environment or had it in a very airy potting mix. Phalaenopsis are epiphytic orchids- they need air around their roots as much as they need water- so don’t keep the roots wet all the time.

    Clear plastic nursery pot with draining holes, you can ever get some for orchids that have slits on the sides. I’ve had the best luck with orchid specific potting medium from rePotme. This may be a little dramatic but focus on the roots. If you have bad roots nothing else will happen except certain death. I’ve managed to keep one alive for 3 years so I def know what I’m doing. (I still have no idea actually)

      LOL yes I have some of those rePotme clear ones in my Amazon basket right now 🤣 I wondered why they said orchid pots specifically LOL mystery solved! Cool I'll go ahead and buy those then I might have one around here somewhere thank you for your advice so should I keep it in the mossy my son bought Spanish moss I know it's in some kind of moss I don't know if it's spagnum or what but I'm assuming soil is a no go, and what size do you think like a 5 in? Or 6 , I can't believe my son did this to me haha 😩🤦🤣

      Whatever size it’s in now, keep the same size. Orchids like to be root bound. I know some people like moss, I don’t because I have a tendency to overwater. 😬 So I prefer quick draining bark mixes. When you repot, make sure all of the moss it came I’d is removed. I highly highly recommend Miss Orchid Girl on yt for repotting tips. I don’t repot until I’ve watched her video and feel more confident 🙃

    It's in Moss right now how do I water it my sense in something about adding water in it letting it soak and then dumping the water out my son who knows nothing about plants just whoever told him

      Moss will retain water longer. If there’s no drainage, then yes, dump the water. But remember to let the roots lead you- if they are still green, leave it to dry for another day or two- if they are silver, go ahead and water. And yes- soil is an absolute no-go. Because your plant is already acclimated to moss, I would repot into a sphagnum moss/bark mix, so the roots aren’t shocked with an entirely new medium. If you went to straight bark, you might have transition issues.

    Ok great to know I've been putting everything in FF Ocean Forest and perlite but I'm finding out that's not working for some of my poor succulents 😩 and others , I'm gonna have to tighten up my soil game thank y'all so much
