Hi fellow plant lovers šŸŒ± Iā€™m new to orchids and may be on my way to killing my first one (sos please help šŸ˜­). I have a moth orchid that started dropping flowers (probably overwatered the moss). I did a rescue repotting and changed its soil to some wood chips I got at a plant store a while ago (not specific to orchids though). Since then, Iā€™ve lost all the flowers, but the leaves are still healthy. I also see the stem is turning brown as well. What should I do from here to turn things around? Thanks in advance!

    You should buy something like this. I bought this at Dollar Tree. It was $5.

    I read that the way they sell orchids is totally wrong. They say to take the plant out and rinse the roots. Put it in a glass jar of some sort and it would regrow. I did that on two of my orchids. One of them completely disintegrated after about a month. The bigger one, I just repotted it in this blend. Itā€™s doing a lot better.

    I seems to me your plants are doing fine with your care. Blooms will last on average 3 months and plants typically rebloom annually. It isnā€™t unusual for the flower spike to die back either. You can trim it back to rough 1/2ā€ from the base. You plants might want a bit more water. I can see some minor wrinkling in the leaves. Phal leaves are smooth when hydrated. To know when to water, look at the roots. They are silver white when dry and green when wet. The roots will need to dry out between waterings so wait until you see silver or white roots inside the pot before watering. I like to use orchid bark with my Phalanopsis, and I suspect using typical media will make things easier starting out. But any course, well draining media could work as long as you watch your plant. The key with these is donā€™t over water and plenty of bright indirect light. Good luck!

    Just a random thought to add since it sounds like youā€™ve gotten a lot of solid advice alreadyā€¦ moth orchids donā€™t like being under 13Ā°C / 55Ā°F, so if youā€™ve had them outdoors, bring them in and ideally put them under a grow light šŸ˜¬

      Oh yeah for sure, just staged for a photo outside. I keep mine inside year round!
