Hello! I need help in regards to my orchids, I have two phalaenopsis orchids, a mini one and a big one, Iā€™ve had orchid troubles in the past and this time Iā€™m fully determined to at least get one of them to bloom again. Itā€™s my first time with a mini orchid and it finished flowering but Iā€™ve had trouble with watering both, I switched to orchid bark and Iā€™ve noticed some of the roots shriveling up quicker than I am used to, I last watered my mini orchid 3 days ago and checked today and noticed a few shriveled up roots I added some spagnum moss with my bark in hopes to keep my roots hydrated without overwatering I also placed it over a pebble bowl with water for humidity šŸ˜­ I donā€™t know what else to do is there anything I am missing?

    Adding sphagnum moss is smart, but I just wanted to note that itā€™s also okay if you need to water orchids more frequently as long as youā€™re only watering once the roots look silver in color. It sounds like youā€™re doing all good things! You didnā€™t mention what kind of light it receives, but lots of bright indirect light will be super important. I have one moth orchid living in a south facing window and another one living under grow lights where it gets about 1,000 foot candles of light for 12 hours. An east facing window or a couple feet back from a west facing window would also work well. Fertilizer will also be important if you donā€™t have one yet- Iā€™ve personally had really good success with the Tezula Plants MSU fertilizer (on Amazon), but dyna-gro orchid pro is also very good!

      Hi! Thank you so much for your response! I had both in front of a north east facing window and I started noticing a purplish shading coming in a lot on my bigger orchid so I moved them a bit back and put then on a shelf that is in between my east and south windows, Iā€™ll include photos of both orchids down below. For fertilizer I use the miracle grow orchid food, Iā€™ve heard iffy things abt it but I also just recently bought a houseplant fertilizer called ferti lome thatā€™s 10-10-10 for all my plants! Iā€™ll look into the fertilizers youā€™ve recommended!

    Your big orchid is in a plastic pot and your mini is in terracotta. Terracotta wicks away moisture very quickly, but plastic keeps moisture trapped. If you want your mini to stay moist for longer, I recommend finding her a plastic pot.

      I appreciate the advice so much, I was scared to death over potential root rot so I thought terracotta would be good, I just switched it back to the plastic that it originally came in since the roots are still small and recovering (hopefully) it was a perfect fit. Should I use any fertilizer or root growth to aid in their recovery? Or is that too much?

      I use schulz orchid fertilizer. You mix it into their water before you water them. 3 watering sessions with, one without, repeat. I have 13 orchids so watering to their specific needs isnā€™t really an option for me, so I water all of them once a week. They seem to like it, all of my orchids are in good health. Feel free to take a look on my profile, Iā€™m pretty sure itā€™s public. I have them all potted in leca, some have bark or perlite mixed in, some are in just straight leca. They usually dry out within 4-6 days. I donā€™t think it would hurt yours to use the fertilizer, it might stimulate more root growth!
