My Oncidium Sharry Baby is in bloom 😊. She didn’t bloom last year and I assume it was a combination of shock from repotting and not the right water and lighting conditions, but this year’s spike are nice. The larger spike is over 2 ft in length. The shorter spike wasn’t supported and it folded on itself yesterday 😖 but didn’t break. I extended the spike support and fingers crossed 🤞🏼 the spike makes it. Lovely sweet fragrance 😊
Wow! That’s a nice comeback. I have a rescue Sharry Baby that I’m still struggling with. It was in terrible condition when I got it, and it’s been slowly coming back, but it’s not showing any sign of blooming any time soon. My other oncidiums seem to really thrive on the light and water I’m providing. I’m starting to wonder if this particular Sharry Baby is just a dud. Do you provide anything different for yours as far as care or fertilization?
0개 좋아요 The year the plant didn’t bloom it was getting west sun, but since last winter I have it under grow lights. I haven’t changed the watering schedule and use the apps recommendations, although a bit more frequent watering might be a good idea since the bulbs are not as plump as I would like. I use collected rain water with weak 20-20-20 fertilizer. I’ve run out of rain water and now using conditioned tap water. I have really hard water. The leaves have always been pleated since I bought the plant. I’m getting some brown spots at the leaf tips and there’s a little yellowing so I’m a little concerned and watching it. The roots are doing really well 😊. I can’t say I know what I’m doing. It’s trial and error for me. I have found that the plants that are under really bright lights are much more vigorous. I hope this helps with your plant.
좋아요 1개Sounds very similar to my experience, except yours has more success in the blooming dept. They definitely seem to be sensitive to dehydration. Thanks for the info, I have a feeling it’s just my particular plant.
좋아요 1개 I definitely have some dud plants or haven’t figured out how to take care of them. I have a Dendrobium kinganum and I cannot get it to thrive. It’s really old now and just lingers despite me giving it outdoors sunlight, the temperature drop, decreased watering in the winter, frequent watering during the growing phase. At most it puts out 4 flowers a year. Pretty none the less but I can’t figure out how to make it happy 🤷🏻♀️
0개 좋아요I know genetically it’s a crapshoot, sometimes there are just plants that aren’t as vigorous. It can be so frustrating. I also have a few seedlings that are just… taking… sooooooo… long… to… mature. But that’s the joy of this hobby, right? It makes it worth it when they finally reward you with a decent bloom show. 🤭
