Will this orchid recover from root rot? It was from the grocery store and in bloom when I received it. I didnā€™t check the roots because it was in bloom but over a few weeks the bulbs began to wrinkle. Today I decided to cut the flower spike off (it was still in bloom but the flowers were starting to fade) and removed all the old potting medium. Media was severely degraded and fungus was growing in it. There was a ā€œplug of deathā€. Lots of mushy roots. I cleaned the plant off and repotted in a small, more ventilated pot with fresh orchidmedia and threw in some charcoal for good measure. Do you think it will survive or is the bulb too far gone? Will the bulb eventually plump back up? What should I do to help the plant recover/ decrease stress on the plant?

    When you repotted, did you trim away the mushy dead roots? In my (on the dryer side) environment, I find that oncidiums need a little more moisture than phalaenopsis, so I use a media that has smaller bark pieces with some sphagnum moss mixed in. You still want the mix to be airy and well ventilated, and not CONSTANTLY wet. But these guys do tend to be thirsty. With chunkier media, I seem to get more wrinkling on the bulbs and ā€˜accordianedā€™ pleating on new leaf growth. In recovery, the pseudobulb will plump up again, but never fully bounce back to a perfectly smooth texture. The new growth should produce a bulb that is fuller and more hydrated, but it may be smaller than the previous two, and a lot of new roots will come from the new growth to support it the plant. But that may take a while, since I donā€™t see one starting at the base. The chances of your orchid recovering are very good, but it may be set back, and not bloom again until it produces a couple new growths and lots of new roots. The good news is, Iā€™ve seen this type of orchid FILL a pot with a nest of roots in a year. Keep us posted with how itā€™s going!

      I hope the plant recovers. Unfortunately there is no new bulb growing. The plant only had the bulb that was in bloom and one older bulb. I pulled off the mushy roots or they fell off as I was washing the plant, but I left the roots in the photo. I was a little worried to remove too much. There were a couple of good looking roots, which is a good sign. It tends to stay moist where Iā€™m at, so I tend to have more problems of overwatering and root rotting than under watering. I have one orchid that grows vertical accordion leaves but it has plump bulbs. Itā€™s odd. Hereā€™s a picture of the media the plant is in now. Is it too chunky? Itā€™s all purpose orchid mix.

      No, absolutely not. Thatā€™s a perfectly good option for oncidiums. It truly depends on your environment, and your watering habits. In a humid environment- thatā€™s ideal, in a dry arid environment, you may be watering every 3-4 days. If you know your lifestyle to be a busy one, where you may occasionally delay watering days, Iā€™d recommend adding some moss, but if you know youā€™re super attentive, and tend to water whenever the medium is dry, this is perfect.
