Can someone educate me on what ‘SD-1’ means on this orchid tag? I went to an orchid show and here’s a picture of the display plant - Oncidium with an all yellow flowers. Does ‘SD-1’ mean first seedling?

    What a lovely flower! SD-1 is part of the name. It probably denotes a specific clone strain of the Oncidesa Lemon Heart. So the full name of the plant is Oncidesa Lemon Heart 'SD-1' That’s my best guess. Maybe Jen or Waspinator can provide a more definitive answer.

      It is an indication of this plant being a clone of the Lemon Heart. That’s my understanding, at least.

    When it has a name and then another name in 'quotes', that denotes that the type of hybrid has a common name (which you often see with primary hybrids or very simple ones where the lineage is well-documented.) Lemon heart is the hybrid name, so all lemon hearts are onc. Sum lai woh (that one is an offspring of two primary hybrids) bred with gomesa concolor (a species). Among all the lemon hearts, there is variation in individuals because they were bred, not cloned. From the lemon hearts, one has been made into a cultivar and cloned, which makes all its offspring identical to the original. That cultivar and all its clones get the name 'SD-1'. Cultivar names are chosen by growers who earn the highest awards in AOS shows, and they can have thier winning plants sent in to labs for mass-production cloning so they can become available to the public

      And more rarely you'll see another name, which indicates that the plant has two or more distinct types/subspecies. For example psychopsis orchids, even the pure species, have a yellow form that's listed as var. Alba after the species name.

      Thank you for that in depth information. This Lemon Heart looks like Oncidium Gower Ramsey (yellow); at least to me it does. This is so fascinating and complicated. I guess the grower is mass producing the clone and selling it at orchid shows and other places. I ended up buying the plant and it does not yet have flowers but is producing a spike. I will end pictures of the flowers

    I originally asked AI what ‘SD’ meant on the tag and it said it might mean the orchid was grown in San Diego. 🤪
