Hi all!! I rescued an orchid from Lowe’s a couple of months ago that what appears to be sunburn. After I got it I accidentally broke one of the two stems🥲 and used shears to clip off the dead ends (this is what YouTube videos had told me to do). However I’m realizing it’s not like humans and once it’s sunburned you gotta clip it off completely. She’s got new growth (yayyy🥰) both on her stems and 2 new leaves due to a new orchid fertilizer I bought. My question is, do I clip the bad leaves completely off so my orchid can put more energy into HEALTHY growth and flowering? I included pics of her little baby leaves and new stem.

I would not cut off the leaves if they are only sunburned and there is still. I able tissue capable of photosynthesis. When you cut, you are creating opportunities for infection. And orchids grow slowly, so you’re reducing the plants ability to feed itself until it can grow additional leaves.

I agree with the other comments. I would add a couple other tips. If the second flower spike is not growing a secondary spike for you like the one I see in the first photo, I would cut it down to the base of the plant. Flower spikes are actually sucking more energy from the plant as it grows new leaves and roots and not providing anything to the health of the orchid. The damaged leaves (as Pi stated above) are still photo synthesizing and helping in recovery, but the flower spikes are not. Not suggesting you cut the one with the new growth, obviously. Secondly, I’m seeing water on the leaves in your picture, pooling down the center and potentially into the crown. This could lead to crown rot or stem rot when it pools in the leaf joints and would be a disaster, especially for an orchid still recovering from another issue like sunburn. Try to water just the potting media.

Thank you so much! I had just finished watering and I usually drain and dab the excess water off, but I’ll be more careful to make sure only the soil is watered next time.
