Orchid friends. I adopted a paph yesterday and it needs help. The plant was wobbling around in the pot, roots are minimal and some squishy, and a baby plant broke off from the parent. I washed it off, spayed with hydrogen peroxide, minimal trimming of the squishy stuff and repotted it in very small pieces of new orchid bark mix. I put a small amount of sphagnum moss around the baby plant. Was this the correct thing to do? The parent plant does have two tiny growths coming out the side. That’s a good sign I hope. What do I do now? Does it need a plastic tent? Rooting hormone? More light? Less light?

    Those aren’t baby plants, they are new fans of this plant. So don’t try to separate them. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen 2 at the same maturity level at the same time. They will grow to the size of the large one, grow their own root system and hopefully bloom for you. Be aware that these roots are not at all like epiphytic orchids- they will dry out if exposed to air, so potting them at the perfect level is really important. They have lower light requirements than most orchids, don’t necessarily need excess humidity, and I haven’t ever used rooting hormone. Really try to keep moisture from getting into the folds of the new growths, they can develop bacterial infections and rot.

    This fan wasn’t attached to the bigger plant when I imported it. Maybe I broke the attachment? It doesn’t look like it has much if any roots. Do you think it’s going to survive?

      It may have just been a bonus plant, sometimes nurseries will pot a couple seedlings in each pot, knowing they don’t all survive. You can certainly try to keep it going- I have had really good results with similar paph issues by putting it in a small pot with a little bed of sphagnum moss and keeping it moist to promote new root growth. Once you have 2 or three roots, two or three inches in length, you can pot it in a terrestrial bark, keeping it pretty well watered until it transitions to the bark media.
