I received this orchid as a gift YEARS ago before I found my grove keeping them alive. The leaves are not thick like the others, they’re kind of Lily-like. I have noticed some new root tendrils peeking out and have been very encouraged. BUT Today I noticed what looks like RUST on some leaves. 1. What kind of orchid is this please? And 2. How do I heal it?

Do you remember what the flowers looked like? If the leaves are thin feeling and the flowers were green, purple or brown, then maybe a Zygopetalum (my guess based on the photo). If the leaves are firmer, kinda stiff and leathery, then something from the Oncidium alliance (less likely). Their flowers are generally numerous and small (unless it’s a Brassia type), and come in yellows, oranges, reds, burgundies, browns and pinks. There are other possibilities but would probably have to be procured from a specialty grower. Orchids can freckle. Generally it’s a dark red or purple spotting, and develops under intense light. I don’t think that is the case here. More likely it’s an infection of some kind. If the spots look wet or weep, then it’s bacterial. It they look pitted or sunken and dry, probably fungal. You’ll need to research before applying a treatment because Oncidiums are not fond of copper treatments used to treat fungus. Check out Miss Orchid Girl on YouTube and the AOS for diagnosis and treatment. Regardless of the type of infection, quarantine from the rest of your collection. Are the spots increasing in number or size?

I would agree that it looks like a zygopetalum- I am currently having a similar issue with mine! But mine doesn’t lose its leaves from the old pseudobulbs, so I’m guessing it’s a deciduous distant relative. AOS suggested that less direct light might be helpful, so I’m trying that. I plan on treating mine this week with a mild fungicide, I’ll let you know how it goes.

Thank you. It’s been so so long and I don’t remember the flowers. I will check out Miss Orchid Girl.
