Hello orchid people! I just got this beauty for Mother’s Day — I know it’s usually a no no to repot while it still has blooms but it seems quite sad and cramped in this pot. My other orchid is thriving in the same kind of airy pot that I’ve shown in the last photo. I’d prefer to switch this one over ASAP but don’t want to shock it and lose flowers. Also it is actually cracking through the bottom of this current pot 😂 What are everyone’s thoughts? (I included the two sizes of pot that I thought would be most appropriate but don’t know whether to keep it somewhat cramped or give it more room) Thanks!

If you don’t want to risk losing the blooms, wait to repot it. It’ll be fine in this pot for a few more weeks while you enjoy the flowers. Just wait to water until the roots are silvery, and the media is dry, since this pot clearly has very little drainage. It looks like a pretty fast root producer, so I might go with the larger pot to give yourself at least 2 years of uninterrupted growth before you repot again. I know there’s a lot of old wive’s tales about orchids needing to be ‘snug in their pots’ but these grow on trees in nature, their roots growing out in all directions to cling onto bark and branches. No contained pot there. So I would consider practicality of care. When you get all the old medium off the roots and cut away any dead ones, (although they look pretty good,) see what you have left and then decide on pot size.

Thank you for your response! We’ll see how long I can wait 😅 looking at how cramped it is makes me mad for no reason. 😂😂

Wow! So beautiful! Thank you for sharing. I may decide to repot and hope for the best. I’ll do some more research as well but wanted to post to get as much advice as possible before making a final decision! Thanks!

I would wait. Roots look to be in very good shape. I don’t like gambling with flowers when I can avoid it. But if Gina will share their secrets, maybe that will change in my household. In my experience they don’t mind a bit of crowding. Just manage the moisture in the pot like Jen said and it will be fine until the blooms fade. Then repot that dude! Ugh, I loath sphagnum. With regard to pot size, I think the key is creating an environment that allows the roots to dry out in a reasonable time. Im a snug pot advocate. It helps me manage moisture in the media. But that’s based on my care for my plants in my growing conditions. Many growers have success with roomier pots. It’s all about customizing solutions to fit your specifics. As usual, opinions in the plant world are legion 😁

Thank you for your response! I agree with what you say about opinions in the plant world 😂 everyone says to do something different. I will probably leave it be for a while. My mom said she followed the tag instructions and watered it with ice before gifting it to me and I was like, “NOOOOOOOO” 😂
