I think it’s time to repot my oncidium Twinkle now that it’s done blooming. It’s been in a 4” square nursery pot since I purchased the plant earlier this year. It seems to be growing entirely in moss. Should I remove some of the moss and replace with a little orchid bark and perlite mix? I don’t want to shock the plant but wonder if I should slowly transition it to orchid bark. Should I gently tease the roots apart to encourage new growth? BTW, the accordion leaf was like that when I purchased the plant and so far no new growth are like that. Thank you in advance for your advice.

    Soaking the roots for a while can help make them flexible for you. Remove as much of the old sphagnum as is convenient. Check for dead roots by gently pressing on them; firm ones are alive and hollow/squishy ones can be trimmed away. It won't mind going firect to bark if that's what you prefer, just keep an eye on it while you adjust to the difference in watering frequency. You could also do a mix of half sphag half bark this time if you want to be gradual about it. As for teasing them apart, just loosen whatever comes easily. epiphytes like to grab onto things, so if it has a tight hold on anything, just leave it be

    The roots appear to be in lovely shape. If it were my plant, I would move to a 50/50 sphagnum/bark mix. Gradual transitions seem to work better in my growing space.

    Thank you. The roots were grabbing on tightly to the moss so I only removed a little around the edges and then put it in a pot one size up and added orchid bark. Fingers crossed the plant continues to grow roots into the bark.
