My friends orchid hasn’t flowered in 2 years. The leaves seem healthy and she just repotted. It was in moss and now she’s in orchid potting mix. She waters it every 28 days. Any help is appreciated!

That potting mix looks way too dense. It should be in orchid bark or sphagnum moss, or else the roots could suffocate

Yeah I agree, orchid mix usually looks chunky. The roots need lots of breathing room 🌸

I agree with the above comments about the media. If your friend decides to go with an airier mix, the plant will need more frequent waterings. The reluctance to bloom could be due to not enough light. Phals can live in lower light levels. However, to gather the energy necessary to bloom, the plant should be in bright indirect light. Another reason could be temperature. Many species phalanopsis require a drop in temp to stimulate blooming. Usually it’s a drop around 10 degrees Fahrenheit for six or so weeks. Simple hybrids sometimes retain that trait. Luckily complex hybrids have mostly bred it out. Those are typically the ones you’ll find in grocery stores. Repotting can interrupt the blooming cycle, but that’s probably not the case here. Some phals are just bashful. And I don’t have time for that. Any plant that doesn’t bloom three years in a row in my house is gifted away. My reasoning is it doesn’t respond to my care but may do better with someone else. Good luck!

Thanks for all the info! The soil looks really dense but it mostly consists of chunks of bark. My bad for the lousy pic 😅 have you heard of success with blooming when you’ve rehomed?

Is it a package mix from a box store? I have purchased similar and find it works better for my aroids than orchids. But given you water monthly, it might be fine. Just watch it and make sure you let the roots dry out. I personally like all bark to mostly bark with a tiny bit of sphagnum. I am heavy with the water so I need a mix that dries out quickly. Sometimes a plant will respond positively to someone else’s care . Especially if you give it to someone with experience with orchids. But some orchids are just jerks that refuse to bloom for anyone. Ultimately you’ll need to decide if you like the plant enough to care for it without flowers. There’s not a wrong answer either way.
