My orchid has these two very large spikes on it. As the buds are growing, I have noticed some dark spots on a few of them. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Does this particular orchid have purplish dots on its blooms? Some present this way on the buds when your flowers are speckled. If not, then keep an eye on whether the spots spread or grow. Do you spray or mist your orchids? In that case it could be botrytis. Botrytis is a fungal disease caused by leaving water on buds, leaves, or bloomed flowers.

I do believe there are speckles on the blooms. It’s a new one, so I can’t remember. I will not mist this orchid and see if I can be certain that I don’t get botrytis. Can I cure it if I do?

Unfortunately not. The good news is that it doesn’t tend to be harmful, just ruins the otherwise perfection of the blooms. I would bet these are splashes of purple on the flowers however, not an infection. Please keep us updated though, I’ll bet it’s a stunning bloom.

It’s supposed to look like a moustache in the middle of the bloom. I’m excited!

      Any progress?

It might just be the buds forming the flowers! Sometimes I can see colors of the flowers coming together on the buds! :)
