Finally, they have begun to pop. This is one of the first flowers to open on an oncidium sphacelatum, native to Mexico and Central America. Sometime called a dancing lady orchid. A lovely orchid with long sprays of lots of small lemon yellow and rust blooms. No scent but dazzling to the eye. Blooms open in quick succession and last about a month. I’ll post another photo once they’ve all opened. I think the oncidium alliance is my favorite group. Lots of variation in the flower form and color, and the plant is interesting looking when not in bloom. Back in my college days, this was the first type of orchid I branched into after I successfully got my phalanopsis to bloom (phals are great confidence boosters 😁). I found this one in a box store. I have to admit I prefer hybrids to species, simply because they are more forgiving. Doesn’t look like I will have as many blooms this year but no bother. One flower is as beautiful as a hundred. Hooray for oncidiums! 👯♀️👯♀️👯♀️
