Hi! I’m determined *not* to kill this little orchid I picked up today. I noticed it came with these little spots on the leaves. Any experience with what that might be and if anything should be done about them? Thanks!

Orchids are epiphytes (a non-parasitic plant that grows on the surface of another plant) so their roots are aerial roots.. meaning they’re meant to be exposed to the air. I’d wager your roots are sitting in moss inside a plastic bag. If you really want to keep this one alive look for a YouTube video on how to properly repot an orchid.

I’m pretty sure you are 100% correct. It seems like they’re pretty tightly packed in there. Would you wait until it’s done flowering?

Just do it when you can. It’s funny they don’t package these things better, it takes 5-7years before an orchid ever produces a flower and then they pack it a way it would be a miracle if it survived 6 months after it leaves the store

You would think! I’m crossing my fingers that the repotting I did saves it. It was looking like some of the roots had a little rot, since the moss was so damp, so it seemed wise to take care of it now rather than wait.

Yeh in the grand scheme of things, the flowers grow back if you lose them too. Here’s to you getting your first orchid to thrive! Some people do really cool mounts to pieces of wood, you can get really creative after just a few YouTube videos about orchids lol. They make special orchid pots too. Lots of options

The dots look like bug damage. It could be it’s already been handled but you could wash your green leaves with soapy water. That kills a lot of pests. Don’t do it often, but if just done rarely to control pests it’s safe

Yes, I agree with Matthew- those look specifically like grazing marks from spider mites. Gently run a white cotton pad, or cloth on the underside of a leaf. If there are reddish specks on it, you still have a pest problem.

If not, great! The damage will never heal, but as long as they are not fresh, you shouldn’t have to worry about an infection occurring. You can expect new leaves to grow without the marks.
