I was just gifted this gorgeous orchid! Wondering what type it is specifically and any advise / tips on care? Also, the roots are sticking out a bit, should I do anything about that?

This is a complex hybrid phalaenopsis orchid. You don’t have to do anything about the aerial roots. Basic care- 1) water when the bark medium/roots are dry. Don’t keep them moist all of the time. Orchid roots like air as much as they like water. 2) try to water the bark exclusively- never leave standing water in the crown or leaf joints as it can cause crown and stem rot. 3) bright shade or indirect sunlight is best. Direct hot sun can burn the leaves. 4) don’t panic when your beautiful blooms fade and drop, it’s just part of the plant’s natural cycle. With proper care they will grow another flower spike for you next year. Good luck! You have a lovely orchid there.

If it sits in there for too long, even a small amount, it can quickly cause the plant to rot. Orchids are complex plants but can actually be extremely simple to care for if you have a good system for them. If its 100% moss I would move to bark once it’s stopped flowering. It’ll drop all its flowers if you do it now. Make sure its in a pot with drainage. Orchids don’t like giant pots. Their roots are like sponges, so a good way to water is fill up the pot to just below the base of the leave, let it soak for 10-20 mins and then completely drain all the water out. Repeat every week to 10 days depending on your environment. Don’t ever cut off naturally yellowing leaves. Wait until it’s totally dried up and you can easily remove it from the plant. Orchids don’t do well with having their leaves cut off. If its got pests/diseases research thoroughly before deciding to cut a leaf off. Good luck! It’s color is beautiful!
