Hey everyone, quick question about this orchid that I got for my birthday (it has a long name as it’s a hybrid). The flowers that it had (and it had a lot of them!) have dried out and I had to cut them off but now I noticed that it has a lot of white roots coming out of the moss at the base and some leaves have started to yellow. Should I repot and if yes any tips on what to repot it in (I have never repotted orchids 🫣) or should I just remove the top moss?? Any suggestions highly appreciated as I would very much like to keep this plant alive (it’s a gift from my mother-in-law and if it doesn’t survive it would be the second one - she already gifted me 2 y ago a rose of the tiny variety that didn’t make it)

If the roots are growing out of the pot, it is time to repot it (orchids like to be a bit root bound though). I just use orchid mix, but it never hurts to add moss and perlite to it for extra drainage. Before you repot, I like to soak mine in water for about ten minutes to help the roots be a little more flexible. Then get all the old substrate off the roots and if there are any mushy or dark roots, cut them off. Then just pot it like you would any plant.

Thank you so much for all these tips! I also thought I’d better repot but since this is my first orchid I didn’t want to get ahead of myself and maybe do more harm than good!
