What do you think about trying to grow one in just water?

I have zero experience with orchids in water so I can’t help you there. BUT if it were me, I would experiment with various setups (bark, sphagnum, water, etc) to see what works best in your conditions. Usually a seedlings and keikis are potted up when they have 2” of roots and leaves. Most look fine but one has an itty tiny bit of root. I’d put that in either sphagnum or water (probably sphagnum) so that it has ample moisture to support the plant. I seem to recall you’ve posted about a Phalanopsis on the forums before. Dendrobium want more light and to dry out more than phals. They also have finer roots as you can see so you might confer using a finer media. They can tolerate lower light but you won’t get the blooms They won’t bloom for the first three or so years as they are too young but you still want to give them ample light. If you are in Florida or similar climate, you can grow them outside all year. I’m in Texas and could probably grow them outside but it’s so hot and I like my AC. My Dendrobiums are right next to my Cattleyas under grow lights that are on for around 12 hours a day and both are blooming. Good luck! I am super excited for you!
