I hope my blooms last a while. These are my first orchids and they seem to like their home as I’ve been getting new buds too.

So excited for you. Lovely plants and fun to begin exploring orchids. Blooms should last one to three months. Once they are done blooming you can try for a second bloom. However, I like to cut the inflorescence back to the base of the plant to let it gather it’s strength for next year’s blooms. Once it’s out of bloom, you can assess the state of the media. Orchids like a lot of air around their roots. New plants for the store tend to be in old broken down media or tightly packed sphagnum, neither of which are good for the long term health of the plant.

Don’t use a typical soil mix. It’s far to dense and would smother the roots. If your plant is in sphagnum, I would repot with a mix of 50% sphagnum 50% bark. That will allow moisture to hang around long enough for the roots to take in what they want without cutting off air circulation. If you are a heavy waterer you can reduce the amount of sphagnum in your mix. My preference is straight bark. The key is a loose airy mix that will allow the roots to dry between waterings. Good luck!
