Ok y’all I did it. We repotted. Wish us luck. I didn’t realize it was in ALL moss, I thought there was bark in there too! Boy was I wrong 😬

Good job! We knew you could do it! Good luck!!! Did you go into a mix of moss and bark? Or just bark? These roots were used to all moss, so if you are transitioning to just bark, you may have to water a little more frequently just so they acclimate to a dryer medium.

I just did bark! Thank you for the tip though, I will water it more frequently than before.

Just keep an eye on the roots, they will tell you how often to water until you get into their new pattern. Let them dry between waterings and you’ll be just fine.

Yay! Oh how I hate tightly packed sphagnum. But the roots don’t look too bad. Hopefully it wasn’t super stressful. I know the first few times I repotted orchids, I was on pins and needles. Please post follow ups. I am super interested in how it responds.

The roots weren’t as bad as I thought they were going to be, and I trimmed off all the mushy ones. And I decided to go ahead and snip off that yellow leaf. I’ll let you know how it goes!! 💚

What is the consensus on cutting off the stem?

I would. You can try for a second blooming, but if it were my plant I would encourage it to focus on developing new roots and leaves.

There are two schools of thought. One is to cut above a node to encourage the possibility of a second bloom. But I personally fall into the second category. When blooms are finished, cut the spike at the base. It allows the plant to put all of its energy into growing leaves and roots, and strengthening itself for next year’s blooming season.
