Hi. My boyfriend got me this moth orchid today but he accidentally broke the stem, right on a node. How can I fix this for the orchid not to die? The plant is over 10 feet away from a window. It was watered one hour before the incident.

I think if you’re lucky, the stem will grow back in about six weeks—at least, that’s what’s supposed to happen when you prune them above a node after blooming. I also think 10 feet away from the window won’t be enough light. Orchids are very sensitive to too much or too little light. I have mine in indirect light about five feet from a window and they like it. However, I’m relatively new to orchids and I might be totally wrong about this stuff, so it would be great if someone with more experience could weigh in.
2 gillningarIt’ll be fine! It might rebloom from that node, but if you see the stem start to yellow and die then just cut off right at the base of the plant. It’ll grow you a new one when its ready. I have one that grew a new stem in about 4 months, and another that has taken 2 years. So if the leaves and roots are still healthy then just be patient. As for the light, they can handle a bit of direct, but indirect is best. Mine are in a north facing window that get an hour of direct first thing in the morning and last thing in the evening.
