Hi. My boyfriend got me this moth orchid today but he accidentally broke the stem, right on a node. How can I fix this for the orchid not to die? The plant is over 10 feet away from a window. It was watered one hour before the incident.

I think if you’re lucky, the stem will grow back in about six weeks—at least, that’s what’s supposed to happen when you prune them above a node after blooming. I also think 10 feet away from the window won’t be enough light. Orchids are very sensitive to too much or too little light. I have mine in indirect light about five feet from a window and they like it. However, I’m relatively new to orchids and I might be totally wrong about this stuff, so it would be great if someone with more experience could weigh in.

It’ll be fine! It might rebloom from that node, but if you see the stem start to yellow and die then just cut off right at the base of the plant. It’ll grow you a new one when its ready. I have one that grew a new stem in about 4 months, and another that has taken 2 years. So if the leaves and roots are still healthy then just be patient. As for the light, they can handle a bit of direct, but indirect is best. Mine are in a north facing window that get an hour of direct first thing in the morning and last thing in the evening.

The flowers may die, but the plant will be fine.
