the dancing lady orchid i got on Valentine's day has took a turn for the worstt. my cat was intent on biting the leaves, so i moved her to the greenhouse. i also repotted her, but i put her in kokedama. full disclosure: past attempts at kokedama with other plants FAILED but i figured i would try it with this orchid bc the plant store guy made such beautiful ones lol i'm definitely regreting my decision and wish i just placed her in a normal clear pot. i cut off some leaves that i didn't like, but she still looks so depressed. any recommendations? could this be transplant shock? stress from cat eating her? does she hate the kokedama? i'm more familiar with the phalaenopsis so getting the oncidium was definitely out of my comfort zone.

    I’ve never made a kokedama from an orchid before, but I do have a few oncidiums. If you think the plant is unhappy, can’t you pot it back in a more traditional way (pot)? I think the plant will take some time to recover from the changes made to it.

    What a lovely bloom! I can see why you snatched this one up. I think kokedama would be challenging for an oncidium. In my experience they tend to be thirstier than phals, I agree with Amy that you are probably dealing with a sulking plant. It changed location and culture, was repotted and got a haircut. For something that’s happy just sitting around pushing out new green bits, that is a lot to deal with. Luckily, they are tough and your plant looks fine (despite your cat’s tender loving care 😉) If it was my plant and it was putting on new roots, I would repot it into a plastic pot with fine bark media. If it wasn’t, I would probably leave it as is and watch for signs of dehydration - look for significant wrinkling on the pseudobulbs or accordion pleating in the leaves. Hydrated plants have smooth or slightly wrinkled pseudobulbs and smooth leaves. Good luck!
