Hey everyone! I’m at a total loss with my poor Orchid. She was healthy when I purchased her at Home Depot. She was originally just in some plastic cups with some sort of foliage. I then went ahead and planted her in loose dirt made for Orchids and she was still thriving. I had white flowers that bloomed but then fell off and so I cut right between the new and old node on the stem and now the stem seems to be dying and I have leaves that are dying as well.. I’m thinking she isn’t getting enough sun light. I water when the dirt seems totally dry and I feed her once a week on Fridays. Today I did notice the dirt was so loose I could just pull them right out so I went ahead and took half the dirt out and stuck them further down into the pot and covered the roots and I made sure to keep those outer roots out for air, which could have also been part of the problem maybe? Here are before and after pics!

    Your container/pot has to have adequate holes for airflow, you can use whatever type and material you prefer. If you're replanting due to overgrowth, go with something that's about two inches larger in diameter than the current pot. Many experts recommend a clear pot so the roots can get the light they need. Please look up orchid pots.

    Firstly, just to be clear- it’s potted in bark chunks, right? Not any type of actual dirt? It’s looks like it from photos, but just want to be sure. Secondly- it’s normal for the flower spike to dry out. Just clip it down to the base of the plant. When it grows enough leaves and roots to support a new one, with good care and conditions, it will give you a new spike. As long as the yellowing leaf is one of the older, lower ones, and you don’t see any progressing of the discoloration to the stem or other leaves, that is normal too. They eventually age and drop. If the roots are firm and you are only watering when they go silver, just keep doing what you’re doing. If the leaves are firm and smooth, not limp and wrinkly, they are getting enough hydration. You can up the light if you want, (just avoid strong direct sun) but this just the regular phalaenopsis cycle.
