You need to wait until it has two or three roots before removing it from the parent plant. You might reinforce the spike in the meantime as a keiki is heavier than flowers and you don’t want it to bend or crease while keiki is still receiving nutrients from the parent plant.

You’ll see roots that look just like the host plants, except shorter. That’s when it’s time to pop it off and plant

I remove it when the keiki has multiple leaves and roots, and the leaves and roots are not are at least 2” long. If the mother plant is not taxed too much, I’ll leave the keiki on until it’s 3” on both sides. You’ll need to vigilant about water. Keikis don’t have a lot of resources to draw from so you shouldn’t let it dry completely out, but don’t keep it water logged either. I like to pot up in my typical mix and topdress the media with sphagnum. I spritz the sphagnum to keep it moist while the media drys out between waterings.
