I had obtained a Bulbophyllum and started noticing about a month ago that portions of a leaf or two had elevated off the soil with the roots exposed, and the body of the bulb formed a black sheath-like structure. Emerging from each of them is a green shoot. What am I seeing?

    I don’t have a lot of experience with bulbophyllums, but based on my knowledge of other orchid types with pseudobulbs, the browning portion just looks like a dried leaf/sheath with potentially, a flower spike emerging from it. The one on the right could certainly be a root tip, but the picture on the left definitely looks more like a flower spike.

      Same, no practical experience with these, but all this reminds me of my cattleyas. I agree the brown portions look like dried leaf sheathes. My guess is the shoots are new pseudobulbs forming. Maybe?

    It is so strange how they have risen up above the soil. I have never seen anything like it.
