I had obtained a Bulbophyllum and started noticing about a month ago that portions of a leaf or two had elevated off the soil with the roots exposed, and the body of the bulb formed a black sheath-like structure. Emerging from each of them is a green shoot. What am I seeing?

I don’t have a lot of experience with bulbophyllums, but based on my knowledge of other orchid types with pseudobulbs, the browning portion just looks like a dried leaf/sheath with potentially, a flower spike emerging from it. The one on the right could certainly be a root tip, but the picture on the left definitely looks more like a flower spike.

Same, no practical experience with these, but all this reminds me of my cattleyas. I agree the brown portions look like dried leaf sheathes. My guess is the shoots are new pseudobulbs forming. Maybe?

      I hope so!

It is so strange how they have risen up above the soil. I have never seen anything like it.
