Just got this new baby after moving one of my other orchids to water. I saw her in my big box store and just couldn't leave her behind. Any orchid tips, especially for those in water, would be greatly appreciated!!

I’m not a fan of water culture, but I know it works for some people. I’d just say to keep an eye on it while it transitions, so the roots aren’t shocked by the sudden change in medium.

Thank you, will do!🫶🏻 I decided to make the switch since they refused to give me any growth in the orchid bark with a small amount of moss. What makes you dislike it?

Because these orchids are epiphytic plants, their roots grow in the air, on the bark of trees in nature. They are not aquatic. Orchid roots are particularly prone to rotting when they are kept too moist all of the time- they need oxygen as much as they need water. So, despite some people having success with water culture in their environment, it just poses too much of a risk for me to chance it. When you say you had no growth in a bark/moss mix, do you mean no leaves, no roots, no flower spikes, or all of the above? And how long have you had the orchids with no growth?

There for a bit of time it was doing fine, I cant remember for sure how long I had the one that refused to grow but its been a while. But it was growing new leaves and having a good time. Then over time it just stopped, I didnt change anything, watered when the roots were silver and kept under a grow light. I've never had an orchid die but perhaps it was a fertilizer issue?

And I appreciate your help thank you so so much!🫶🏻 anything I can do/learn to help them thrive i will do! I do know they're epiphytic, so ive been making sure the roots also touch the air but decided to switch because of the lack of growth.

I've also been looking into trying the bare root method, do you think they would be happier this way?😊

Make sure the actual stem of the plant doesn’t remain constantly wet, and don’t forget to fertilize
