Hi! So i came very close to killing this poor guy, i got very busy and forgot to water him for 3 months but have recently watered and have been giving all the sunlight needed and i see green!! Now next step: should i cut off the main stem? it’s very dry and there’s no color in it anymore. Should i repot it with fresh orchid mix? Please let me know!! I want to survive Mr. Orcha!
Ooof, you may have caught this just in time. If the entire base of the plant was dry, it would be done for- but that small amount of green on the stem means there’s hope. ABSOLUTELY cut the flower spike. There zero chance of that blooming if it’s brown and dried, but also zero chance of growing a keiki to save the plant. It is doing nothing to help your orchid. Normally I would say repot to give your orchid the best chance of survival, but I might wait a week or so to not disturb the roots while you are rehydrating it. You want to water thoroughly, and when you see the roots go from green to silvery, water again. Don’t wait an extra few days or a week, try to water, dry, water. Keep an eye on her, don’t let her get too thirsty as she recovers. If you are still seeing signs of hope, then go ahead and repot into fresh medium. Trim away dead papery roots, and I’d recommend a bark/sphagnum moss mix to give it a touch of extra moisture as it rebuilds. Hopefully in the next month or two you’ll see a new leaf begin to grow from the crown, or potentially a basal keiki. If the stem continues to dry out and get woody instead of green and growing, it’s pretty much done. You need a healthy crown to grow leaves. If you don’t have that, no amount of roots are going to matter.
