My uncle sent my spouse and I an orchid as a house warming gift. There’s a secret plastic pot inside the ceramic pot. The plastic does not have drainage, the ceramic does. How do I safely repot this guy? And care for it in general?

You could always carefully cut holes in the plastic pot? If you’re new to orchids it’s helpful to have them in clear pots so you can see the roots. Thats what will tell you when it needs water. If you repot while its blooming it will almost certainly drop all its flowers.

Thank you! The plastic pot inside is clear so I’ll just cut holes in it and take a look here and there, and repot it later

Green roots = don’t need water. White/silvery roots = time to water. Don’t water with ice cubes. Depending on what medium its in, a good way is to submerge the roots and let them soak for 15-20 mins (or till they’ve turned green again) then dump all the water. Orchid roots are like sponges, so they retain a lot of moisture. If your plant is in straight moss then don’t water this way as the moss will retain too much moisture and you’ll risk root rot.

josh.martineauuuIf you take the plastic pot out for a bit it will really help! They like their roots to have a little sun as they grow off of trees in nature!
