I am admitting I need help with this little guy! I have about 9 orchids that are doing wonderful, but this guy has been knocked down by my cat it seems like at least once a week, which means I was constantly picking up orchid bark and replacing the orchid back in it’s pot. It is my only orchid I have ever had get major root rot (I believe because of all the potting and re potting) so I cut all the dead roots off. It’s been 4 weeks and it looks like what is growing is still dead! The leaves are hanging in there though. I have him in orchid bark, nothing more. I am watering according to the apps schedule, and he is in the proper sunlight as well as proper humidity. (Along with all my other happy orchids) Any advice would help! Trying to keep this guy alive!

    Poor thing. I would try to gently peel back some of the dried leaf remains from the base of the stem. That’s where new roots will begin to poke out if they are coming, and you want to give them as easy a path as you can. Also, if the bottom portion of the stem, 1/4 inch or so under that last flower spike, is completely dried out- I’d trim it. The less dead material sitting in the potting media, the better- especially if you’ve been dealing with root rot, which CAN move up the base of the plant into the stem, causing stem rot, and the loss of your orchid. I might also consider adding a little sphagnum moss to the top of your bark and just keeping it moist to potentially promote and encourage any new root tips. You don’t want those new roots drying out, but again, you don’t want the dead material just sitting in the damp, so you’re walking a bit on a tightrope on this one. The leaves look fantastic for being rootless for a month. It’s going to be a while before it can grow roots long enough to support the plant and sustain itself- so prepare yourself for the leaves to get pretty wrinkly and leathery while you wait. If it’s growing roots though, it’s still fighting, so don’t give up on it. Keep us posted- we’ll be rooting for you… pun intended.
