It looks like it may be in its original nursery plug- a sort of sponge-y material? Since it’s already out of the pot- I assume you are looking to repot? Is this a fairly basic oncidium cross? They tend to need a little more water than cattleyas and tolerate drought less than a phalaenopsis. So depending on your environment… really dry? Really humid? I would go with a ventilated clear plastic pot, (they still need air pockets,) with a smaller sized bark- not super chunky. I’d add some sphagnum moss mixed in if you tend to go longer between waterings, or have a dryer environment. Before repotting, give the roots a gentle squeeze. If they are firm, they are healthy. If they’re mushy or flat and papery, they are dead and you should cut them away.

I was going to put it in orchid mix. Some of the roots look like they are rotting. It's a pretty dry environment, Except summer.

Yes, there are orchid mixes (primarily bark) more suited to oncidiums with really small bark pieces. I highly recommend repotme mixes. However, if you go with something general, with chunkier pieces, you may just have to water more frequently.
